Cheapest Petrol in Hobart: Where to Find Low Fuel Prices in Tasmania

A guide to fuel prices in Hobart and across Tasmania. Which suburbs are cheapest, how Tasmanian prices compare to the mainland, and how to save at the pump.

BowserBuddy Team··4 min read

Tasmanians pay more for fuel than most of the mainland. Shipping costs across Bass Strait add a few cents per litre, and less competition means less downward pressure on prices. But within Hobart and across Tasmania, there are still meaningful differences — enough to save $5–10 per fill if you know where to look.

Why Tasmania pays more

Tasmania's higher fuel prices come down to geography and scale:

  • Bass Strait shipping — all fuel arrives by tanker via Bass Strait, primarily through the Bell Bay terminal near Launceston, receiving both domestically refined product and imported fuel from Asia
  • Smaller market — fewer stations and lower volumes mean less competitive pressure
  • No local refining — Tasmania has no refinery, so it's entirely dependent on imported product

The ACCC consistently records Hobart fuel prices above the average of the five largest capital cities. The premium above major mainland capitals varies but has historically been in the range of 5–10c/L.

Cheapest areas in Hobart

Moonah and Glenorchy

Moonah, Glenorchy, and the Main Road corridor through the northern suburbs consistently have Hobart's most competitive fuel prices. Multiple stations along Main Road and Brooker Highway compete for commuter traffic heading into the CBD.

Bridgewater and Brighton

Bridgewater and Brighton, further north along the highway, often match or beat Glenorchy prices. If you're commuting from the northern suburbs, fill up before you hit the city.

Rokeby and Howrah

On the eastern shore, Rokeby and Howrah have competitive stations along the East Derwent Highway. Not as many options as the western side, but worth checking.

Where it's usually more expensive

Hobart CBD and Sandy Bay are consistently the priciest. Battery Point and inner South Hobart have limited options and high prices. Taroona and Kingston on the southern fringe are also typically above average.

Outside Hobart

Launceston

Tasmania's second city has reasonable competition, particularly along Wellington Street and the highway approaches. Prices are similar to Hobart's average — sometimes slightly cheaper due to being closer to the Bell Bay fuel terminal, Tasmania's primary import point for petroleum products.

Regional Tasmania

Prices climb sharply in regional areas. West Coast towns (Queenstown, Strahan) and East Coast towns (Bicheno, Swansea) can be 15–25c/L above Hobart. If you're doing a road trip, fill up in Hobart or Launceston first.

Devonport and Burnie on the north coast are more competitive — they benefit from proximity to the Bell Bay fuel terminal and Bass Strait ferry traffic.

The competition picture

Tasmania has fewer independents than the mainland. The market is dominated by BP, Shell/Reddy Express (formerly Coles Express), and Ampol/EG:

  • United and Metro stations where they exist tend to be among the cheapest
  • Costco doesn't operate in Tasmania — one less source of price pressure
  • Puma Energy has a few Tasmanian sites that can be competitive

Loyalty discounts

Both major loyalty programs operate in Tasmania:

  • Everyday Rewards: 4c/L off at EG Ampol and participating Ampol Foodary stations
  • Flybuys: 4c/L off at Reddy Express (formerly Coles Express)

On Tasmania's higher base prices, the 4c/L discount represents a slightly larger percentage saving than on the mainland. Toggle these in BowserBuddy's filter bar to see the real price at every station.

Tips for Tasmanian drivers

  1. Fill up in Hobart or Launceston before road trips — regional prices are significantly higher
  2. Check the northern suburbs first — Moonah/Glenorchy is almost always cheaper than the CBD or southern suburbs
  3. Watch for price dips — prices can drop when new shipments arrive, though this is harder to predict than price cycles in the major mainland capitals. BowserBuddy's live data will surface these dips when they happen.
  4. Use loyalty discounts — they're worth more in Tasmania where base prices are higher
  5. Don't fill up at the airport — prices near Hobart Airport are consistently among the highest in southern Tasmania

Finding the cheapest fuel right now

Prices change daily. The best approach is always to check live data before filling up.
