Cheapest Petrol in Adelaide: Where to Find Low Fuel Prices in SA

A guide to fuel prices in Adelaide and across South Australia. Which suburbs are cheapest, how mandatory price reporting works, and tips for saving at the bowser.

South Australia is now live on BowserBuddy, covering all 718 stations across the state — from the Adelaide CBD to outback towns like Coober Pedy and Ceduna. Every price you see comes directly from the SA Government's mandatory fuel price reporting scheme, updated every 15 minutes.

How SA fuel price reporting works

South Australia has had mandatory fuel price reporting since 2021 under the Statutes Amendment (Fuel Pricing Information) Act 2020. Every fuel retailer in the state must report their prices to the government within 30 minutes of any change.

This means:

  • Every station is covered, not just a sample
  • Prices are current — typically within 15–30 minutes of a change at the bowser
  • No guesswork — the data is official, not crowdsourced

The scheme is operated by the same company (Informed Sources) that runs Queensland's fuel price reporting, so the data quality is identical.

Where to find cheap fuel in Adelaide

Adelaide's cheapest fuel tends to cluster in a few areas:

Northern suburbs

Suburbs like Elizabeth, Salisbury, and Smithfield often have competitive prices. The high density of independent and discount retailers in Adelaide's north creates strong price competition.

Southern suburbs

Noarlunga, Hackham, and suburbs along South Road often compete on price, especially for U91 and diesel.

Costco and independents

Costco at Kilburn consistently undercuts the market by 5–15 c/L on most fuel types. You need a Costco membership ($65/year), but if you fill up there regularly, the savings add up fast. Independent brands and Liberty stations are also worth checking — they often price below the major brands.

What about On the Run (OTR)?

OTR is the dominant SA brand with the most stations across the state. Their prices vary — some OTR stations are competitive, others sit at the higher end. OTR's pricing strategy tends to vary by location rather than following a single state-wide price, so it's worth checking each station individually.

Does Adelaide have a price cycle?

Adelaide's price cycle is less predictable than Perth's or Sydney's. While east coast cities like Sydney and Brisbane follow a roughly fortnightly cycle (prices spike then gradually fall over 2–3 weeks), Adelaide's pattern is less dramatic.

That said, there are still variations:

  • Midweek tends to be slightly cheaper than weekends
  • Price jumps do happen, but they're smaller and less synchronised than in Sydney or Melbourne
  • Regional SA (outside metro Adelaide) tends to be more stable but generally more expensive

The best strategy is to check before you fill up rather than trying to time the cycle.

Regional SA — what to expect

Fuel prices increase significantly once you leave metro Adelaide:

  • Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier, Port Augusta — typically 10–20 c/L more than Adelaide
  • Remote outback (Coober Pedy, Marla, Innamincka) — can be 40–80 c/L more than Adelaide, reflecting transport costs

If you're planning a road trip through regional SA, fill up in Adelaide or the last major town before heading into remote areas.

Fuel types available

SA stations report prices for all standard fuel types:

FuelAvailability
U91 (Unleaded)Virtually every station
U95 (Premium 95)Most metro stations
U98 (Premium 98)Most metro stations
E10Limited — far fewer stations than the east coast
DieselMost stations
Premium DieselMost metro stations
LPGAround 140 stations across SA

E10 is notably less common in SA than in Queensland or NSW. If your car can run E10 and you want the cheapest option, you may need to search a bit harder.

Tips for saving on fuel in Adelaide

  1. Check BowserBuddy before filling up — a 2-minute check can easily save $3–5 per tank.
  2. Compare across fuel types — sometimes U95 is barely more than U91, making the upgrade worthwhile. BowserBuddy highlights these "upgrade" opportunities in amber.
  3. Consider Costco if you're a member — consistently among the cheapest in the state.
  4. Fill up in the suburbs, not the CBD — CBD stations tend to charge a premium for convenience.
  5. Use loyalty programs — toggle Everyday Rewards or Flybuys on BowserBuddy to see which stations offer the best discounted price.
